Using “Design Thinking” to Give an Employee-centric Onboarding Experience to New Joiners

Starting a new job can be stressful and awkward. An employee-centric onboarding experience for the new joiners, such as a warm welcome on the first day of work, can help them not only to overcome their nervousness, but to make them feel being valued, leading to a stronger sense of belonging and greater commitment to their jobs and companies in the long run.

By the way, have you heard about the term ‘Design Thinking’? Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based, human-centric approach to solving problems in innovative ways. In fact, many companies and their business functions have started incorporating the Design Thinking concept into the development of organizational policies and practices. Human Resources is one of them.

Talent Academy has proudly worked with the Human Resources Department of a public transport company to use Design Thinking to create an employee-centric onboarding journey for its newcomers. In a HR Design Thinking Workshop, HR practitioners learnt to strengthen their innovative thinking capabilities and ignited their ideas through 3 steps – to question, to clarify and to refine - to come up with ways to enhance the onboarding experience for their newcomers. After the workshop, participants are confident that with the newly designed onboarding journey, the new joiners will be able to adapt to the new working environment and integrate with the company and teams easily and quickly, and most importantly, happily.
