The New Definition of KPI

Striving for continuous improvement and excellence is at the core of what we do, which is why our training team always takes the time to conduct post-program and project reviews. These sessions allow us to debrief and share valuable lessons learned. In a recent review of the performance management program series, our consultants, Matchy & Christopher, come into an inspiring discovery.

In the corporate world, we’re all familiar with KPIs—Key Performance Indicators—and other tools like the Balanced Scorecard and OKRs that help set goals and measure outcomes. The clarity of these goals is essential for aligning business direction and strategy while keeping everyone focused on delivering results.

But as we all know, results are only one side of the equation. The other side, which is just as crucial, involves having a dedicated and committed team to achieve those results. It’s the perfect blend of the science and art of management. As we delved into this, Christopher and I came up with a new twist on the classic KPI. We asked ourselves, what if KPI also stood for something else?

That’s when it hit us: "Keep People Inspired." After all, how can managers keep their teams inspired and engaged so they’re motivated to achieve those big goals? We believe this is more important than ever in today’s workplace, where multiple generations are working side by side, and the pressure to deliver is high.

With these two KPIs in mind—Key Performance Indicators and Keep People Inspired—we brainstormed a list of strategies, practical tips, and tools to help managers achieve both. It’s all about balancing the numbers with the people who drive them.

In the end, success isn’t just about hitting targets; it’s about inspiring the people who make those targets possible. Because when people are inspired, extraordinary results follow.
