Across Generations Engagement

Last week, our Senior Training Consultant, Daniel, delivered a 2-hour Webinar on “Across-Generation Communication.” It was one of those ‘aha!’ moments that reminded us of the communication challenges we face in the workplace, especially with multiple generations involved.

During the pre-program survey, something intriguing emerged: while most managers recognize the different mindsets, preferences, and work styles of each generation, many admitted feeling stuck in a communication loop, as if floating in a black hole without a clear way forward. Sound familiar?

Today's training shed light on the situation, and here are a few key takeaways:

• One size doesn’t fit all: Each generation brings its own vibe to the table, so adaptability is key. Whether it’s tailoring your language or approach, a little flexibility can create better connections. For instance, Generation X may prefer face-to-face communication, while Generation Z leans towards digital platforms like WhatsApp.

• Create a space for all voices: A multigenerational team thrives when everyone feels safe to speak up without fear of judgment. Psychological safety is crucial for open sharing. When giving feedback, focus on actions rather than attributes. For example, instead of saying “You seem irresponsible because you didn’t inform me you were late to work,” try “You were late to work three times this week. Please let me know what’s happening. Timeliness is important for the team.”

• Tech is your friend (but don’t forget the human touch): Younger generations may favor digital communication, while older colleagues might prefer face-to-face interactions. Balancing tech-savvy approaches with personal touch can bridge many gaps.

It’s easy to get tangled in generational differences, but the real magic happens when we embrace these strengths and communicate with openness and curiosity. After all, it’s not about the age difference—it’s about how we connect, collaborate, and keep learning from one another. Let’s keep the conversation going!
